I’ll say this on behalf of all companies with a product to sell: we all work hard to bring great products to market for a reason. When you view efficiency as an increase in your capacity then you’ll begin to notice ways to improve your ability to scale operations as revenue grows. The better way to assess whether a solution will give you a return on investment is to decide whether you can live without the solution altogether. Of course you must consider the cost – spending $5,000 to save $500 doesn’t make a lot of sense. On the other hand, if the solution will increase your revenue by $10,000 while saving you $500 then spending $5,000 can make sense.
I just finished reading an article about LPL on Financial-Planning.com titled “LPL: ‘We’ve Arrived’” and was struck by just how important technology has been to aid in their recruitment of advisors and to grow their business. Obviously running a company today requires technology but choosing the right mix of technology can either just facilitate your operations or make you operationally excellent. In LPL’s case, they appear to be operationally excellent (even if they aren’t my customer – yet).
The lesson here is to know your presentation technology. Whether it be Powerpoint, a microphone, a conference call, or even the mute button on your headset, it truly pays to take a few minutes well before the call to become familiar with the basic operation of the tools.
Normally economies of scale refer to buying goods in volume to lower the cost per unit; when it comes to business operations economies of scale refer to how processes work in relation to your resources and personnel.
