Three kinds of people go to tradeshows: those who want solutions, those who solve problems and those who bring the two together. Having played all three of those roles throughout my career I know it’s a challenge to design a conference that maximizes the value for everyone.

I’ll say this on behalf of all companies with a product to sell: we all work hard to bring great products to market for a reason. So why shouldn’t everyone have a great chance to present their hard work to the world on a platform that actually reaches the right audience? You’ve heard the phrase “know your audience” but do you know how to do that? Of course it means to know who is in your audience, what their general preferences are, to know different ways to relate to them, etc. Assuming you know who you’re talking to, how do you communicate in a way that allows them to easily understand your points?
The lesson here is to know your presentation technology. Whether it be Powerpoint, a microphone, a conference call, or even the mute button on your headset, it truly pays to take a few minutes well before the call to become familiar with the basic operation of the tools.
